In order to provide comprehensive care to our transplant patients and their families, our program offers a psychosocial support service. We recognize that the stem cell transplant experience creates emotional strain for both patient and family. Feelings of anxiety, depression, frustration, and guilt are common. Likewise, coping with prolonged isolation and taxing hospital routines can also be stressful. Our social workers and oncology counselors are trained professionals who have experience with the psychosocial needs of transplant patients and their families. They offer individual, family, and group support sessions aimed at identifying stressors and developing ways to cope with them. Similarly, our social workers will also assess the need to refer your case to outside agencies for financial assistance as this can also cause financial and emotional stress.Patients (when age appropriate) and their primary family members are expected to participate in our pre-transplant psychosocial screening and to utilize supportive counseling both during and after hospitalization.
For adult and young adult patients, our ongoing stem cell transplant support group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month and is open to both transplant candidates and patients/families post-transplant.
